Madeira Islands

Situated about 350 miles west of Morocco, Africa, in the Atlantic ocean, the Madeira Islands archipelago is a popular year-round holiday location. The name Madeira derives from the island being covered by woodland when it was discovered in 1419 by the Portuguese. (Madeira is portuguese for wood). The islands are an autonomous region of Portugal, and therefore member of the European Community.

Due to its positioning (33° 00'N, 17° 00'W ) Madeira has a moderate climate year round, ranging from 16 to 25° C. Historically this has been very important, as madeira was a stopover for travellers to aclimatize, when travelling from "the new world". Madeirans therefore have been welcoming travellers from around the world for quite some time.

Of volcanic origin, the island boasts of some incredible scenery. Jagged gorges run their way from the centre of the island to the sea. Madeira is home to Europes highest sea cliff, Cabo Girão, which dives 589 meters down to sea. The geografic terrain and location means Madeira has lush vegetation and if often called "the floating garden". The highest peak is Pico Ruivo standing at 1862 meters. The island has a land area of 789 square Kilometers or 308 square miles.

There is plenty to do on the island, which is renowned for example for its levada walks. Levadas are waterways blasted from the cliff faces, that run the length of the island, taking water to where it is most needed. One of the best ways to see the island, you can look forward to some breathtaking scenery, along sinous paths that curve round the inside and outside of the island.
You can look forward to a variety of activities on the island, as well as local arts and crafts, like wickerwork and embroidery. The Islands world famous Madeira Wine, look out for the "arraiais", open-air popular festivals, with fireworks, dances and songs, where you can taste the local cusine.
