Things to do on Madeira Island

Levada at Rabaçal

Madeira offers a fabulous choice of unmissable activities and locations to visit during your holiday on the island.
Right next to Quinta das Colmeias we have the Santo da Serra Golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior, a fabulous 27 holes, par 72 with breathtaking scenery. You will also find the Quinta de São Jorge horse riding center next door providing lessons and walks for all levels of riders. There is also a small park in the village, famous for its cider. The beach at Machico is only 10 minutes away as is Santa Cruz, the kids will love the Aqua Park there.
The best way to explore the Island is by car, the owners at Quinta das Colmeias can arrange the hire for you locally.
Long known as a walkers paradise, Madeira has much to offer for experienced walkers as well as for those that just want to 'see the sights'. Try the levada walk at Rabaçal, through UNESCO world heritage Laurisilva forests. Cross the grand massive from Pico Areeiro to Pico Ruivo the highest point on the Island or walk to the end of the Island at Ponta de São Lourenço. Enjoy the fantastic sub tropical environment with all the fabulous endemic flora and fauna, dramatic scenery surrounded by the blue Atlantic Ocean.
A boat trip in the bay of Funchal will give you a wonderful perspective, go whale and dolphin watching, or if you a feeling adventurous take a day off and visit the Desertas Islands or even Porto Santo.
Explore the old part of Funchal, visit the colourful farmers market, climb up to Monte on the spectacular cable car, enjoy the beautiful gardens and shoot back down to town on the emblematic wicker tobbogans.
Try some madeira wine, taste the the differences and see which you prefer, savour the local cusine like the espetada and the espada (black scabard fish), the delicious caldeirada and don't forget the bolo do caco and lapas a local delicacy.
Visit the charming villages of Camara de Lobos, Curral das Freiras, the natural pools at Porto Moniz, cross the Paul da Serra and be sure to stop at Fanal. Madeira has world class surf, at Jardim do Mar you can expect awesome 5 metre right handers. Enjoy a wonderful meal at Quinta do Furão in Santana on the beautiful North Coast with breathtaking ocean views...all these unforgetable experiences.
Quinta das Colmeias is a fabulous place to stay, an authentic Quinta in the countryside, where you can easily explore the best the island has to offer with all the privacy and comfort of your own home.
